After investigating the changes in Dian Lake and the government's plans to reclaim land from the lake, you realized that raising awareness about the issue was crucial to protecting the lake. Thus, you started an awareness campaign to inform the community about the dangers of land reclamation and pollution.

You began by creating flyers and posters to educate the community about the issue. You included statistics on the changes in the lake over the past 30 years, the effects of pollution on the environment and people's health, and the dangers of land reclamation. You also included ways in which the community could get involved in protecting the lake.

You then shared these flyers and posters with the community, putting them up in public places such as community centers, markets, and schools. You also shared them on social media platforms, such as WeChat and Weibo, and encouraged people to share the message and join the cause.

The response from the community was positive. People started to become aware of the dangers of pollution and the importance of protecting the lake. They shared the message with their friends and family, and more people became involved in the cause.

You also created a social media page for the campaign. You regularly posted updates on the campaign's progress, as well as educational content about pollution and environmental protection. You also encouraged people to share their own stories about the lake and the changes they had seen over the years.

As the campaign gained momentum, you decided to organize a community event to bring people together and further raise awareness about the issue. You worked with local businesses and schools to organize a lake clean-up event, where people could come together and remove litter and waste from the lake and its surroundings.]

After organizing an awareness campaign and collaborating with local organizations to advocate for the protection of Dian Lake, you realized that clean-up efforts were also necessary to protect the lake. You decided to partner with local businesses and schools to increase participation and raise awareness of the community's impact on the environment.

You began by identifying local businesses and schools that shared your commitment to environmental protection. You reached out to them to discuss the importance of clean-up efforts and the impact that pollution can have on the lake's ecosystem. You urged them to participate in clean-up efforts and encouraged them to spread the message to their students, employees, and customers.

With the help of these partners, you organized a series of clean-up efforts around the lake and its surroundings. You provided gloves, trash bags, and other supplies for participants to use in collecting litter and waste. You also used the opportunity to educate participants about the dangers of pollution and the importance of protecting the environment.

The clean-up efforts were a huge success, with many people from the community coming together to protect the lake. Participants collected litter and waste from the lake and its surroundings, removing harmful pollutants and making the area cleaner and safer for wildlife.

Through these efforts, you were able to raise awareness about the impact of pollution on the environment and encourage the community to take action in protecting the lake.

The partnership with local businesses and schools was crucial in increasing participation and making the community aware of the impact of their actions on the environment. It also helped to foster a sense of responsibility and commitment to environmental protection among members of the community.

In 1960, the temperature differences between winter and summer in Kunming were relatively small, with the winter temperatures ranging from 10°C - 22°C and summer temperatures ranging from 15°C - 23°C. This meant that the seasons were relatively mild and predictable, allowing the local residents to comfortably go about their daily lives.

Fast forward to 2022, and the picture has changed dramatically. Winter temperatures now range from 4°C - 16°C , a significant decrease from what was experienced in 1960. This has resulted in longer and more severe winters, with heavy wind and rain conditions that are affecting transportation, agriculture, and other important sectors of the local economy.

In the summer, the temperature range has increased slightly, with temperatures ranging from 18°C -24°C. This may seem like a small change, but the impact is significant. The increase in summer temperatures has led to more frequent and intense heatwaves, which are causing widespread health problems, as well as damage to crops and other vegetation.

Loss of Biodiversity

Human activities have accelerated the decline of lakes in recent decades due to the disturbance of the natural environment.

Some lakes have turned into swamps or have been drained to become farmland.

The reduction in lake surface area and the destruction of habitat caused by lake diking and swamping threaten the survival of fish species, and in some cases, even result in extinction.

]
(align:"<==")[

One prime example of lake diking is Yunnan Lake, also known as Dian Lake, in Kunming. In 1970, the lake surface area was reduced by 2500 hectares due to diking. The diked areas were mostly shallow waters where native fish species bred and fed, such as Sinocyclocheilus grahami, Xenocypris Yunnanensis, Anabarilius Alburnops, and A. Polylepisu. These species used to account for 50% of the lake's fish yield, but the loss of habitat has led to a sharp decline in yield, and they are now on the brink of extinction. Today, only a few widespread species such as Carp, Eel, and Loach can be found among the 25 native fish species in the lake.

The worst destruction of fish genetic resources occurred at Yilong Lake in Yunnan. The lake was used for water discharge and electricity generation in 1952, and the dikes were dug to drain the lake for farming in 1971. The water level dropped by more than 4 meters, resulting in a greatly reduced lake surface area and severely damaged habitats for fish breeding and feeding along the lake shores, shallow beaches, stone quarries, and bays that had become arid. Drought in 1979-1980, followed by a catastrophic event in April 1981 in which the entire lake dried up for more than 100 days, resulted in the extinction of most native fish species in the lake, including the endemic species Cyprinus Yilongensis. The extinction of these species and the loss of their genes is irreversible and its magnitude is immeasurable.]

Sea Birds

Each winter thousands of seagulls from Siberia make the long trip of over three thousand kilometers to Kunming to spend the winter in what is known as China's Spring City. The black-headed gulls first arrived in Kunming in 1985, to everyone's surprise. They have since fallen in love with the city, spending most of the winter in Kunming every year for over 35 years now.

Although this is not a new phenomenon, many Kunming residents still enjoy spending their weekends and days off feeding and spotting seagulls in the warm Yunnan sunshine. The migrating birds could hardly imagine a warmer welcome, which could be part of the reason they have been coming back for so many years.

However, as you grew older, you started to notice changes in the lake's water quality and level. The water became murky, and the fish started to disappear. You learned that the lake's water level had decreased significantly over the years, which was affecting the lake's ecosystem. Additionally, pollution from factories, agriculture, and residential areas was seeping into the lake and further degrading the water quality.

As you dug deeper into the issue, you learned about the government's plan to reclaim land from the lake. This was a cause for concern, as it would only exacerbate the pollution problem and further harm the lake's ecosystem. You realized that you needed to take action to protect the lake and prevent the government's plans from coming to fruition.

You researched the changes in the lake over the past 30 years, and you were shocked by what you found. The lake's water level had decreased by over 50%, and the water quality had significantly deteriorated. Fish were dying off, and algae blooms were becoming more frequent, causing the water to turn green. These findings only strengthened your resolve to protect the lake. You knew that if nothing was done, the lake's ecosystem would continue to degrade, affecting not only the environment but also the livelihoods of people who depended on the lake for fishing, tourism, and other activities. Thus, you decided to take action by raising awareness about the issue and mobilizing the community to protect the lake.]

Water Quality

Water from Lake Dianchi’s basin has been used for domestic, industrial, and agricultural purposes, “however, the lake receives sewage, industrial effluents, irrigation return flows and storm runoff for repeated water re-use, with its quality deteriorating well below the national minimum standard for potable water supply,” making the usage of this water potentially dangerous

The damage to Lake Dian has a significant impact on human consumption of water. As the lake's water quality degrades, it becomes less suitable for drinking, irrigation, and industrial use. Contamination of the lake's water by pollutants and toxic substances can lead to health problems for those who use it for drinking or agriculture. In addition, the reduced availability of clean water can lead to water scarcity and competition for resources, potentially leading to social and economic tensions. Therefore, it is important to take steps to protect and preserve Lake Dian to ensure a reliable source of clean water for human consumption.

Water pollution is the accumulated damage to water resources over many decades. Generally, it takes at least 10 to 20 years for environmental management to show significant results. In addition, there is no precedent in history of a lake that is being polluted fully recovering. This means that the management of lake water pollution is a difficult and complex project requiring a long period of time to be completed; it indicates that Kunming Dian Lake still has a long way to go.
